Psychological Assessments in Calgary

A psychological assessment can be the turning point that brings clarity after years of unanswered questions. At Solasta, our registered psychologists offer comprehensive assessments for adults and children — using gold-standard tools to provide accurate, detailed answers and a clear path forward.

What is a Psychological Assessment?

A psychological assessment is a structured, multi-session process conducted by a registered psychologist. It goes well beyond a quick questionnaire — it combines clinical interviews, standardised assessment tools, behavioural observation, and collateral information to build a comprehensive picture of how a person thinks, learns, processes information, and experiences the world.

The result is a detailed written report that documents findings, explains what they mean for the individual specifically, and provides recommendations for support, accommodations, and next steps.

Assessments are used to:

  • Understand why someone is struggling in ways that aren’t explained by effort or intelligence
  • Obtain a formal diagnosis that opens doors to practical support — workplace accommodations, school supports, the Disability Tax Credit, and funding programs
  • Answer questions that have gone unanswered for years, often providing significant relief and self-understanding
  • Guide treatment planning for therapy and other interventions

Why Get a Private Assessment?

In Alberta, wait times for publicly funded psychological assessments can range from one to three years or more — and in many cases, adult assessments are not available through the public system at all.

A private assessment at Solasta means answers within weeks rather than years. For many clients, the practical benefits — access to the Disability Tax Credit, workplace accommodations, or appropriate educational support — recoup a significant portion of the assessment cost in the first year alone.

We offer a free consultation call to help you understand whether an assessment is the right next step, what it involves, and what it costs — before you commit to anything.

Our Assessment Services

Adult Autism Assessment

Many autistic adults spent years or decades unidentified — often developing sophisticated strategies to mask their differences at significant personal cost. Our adult autism assessments use gold-standard tools including the ADOS-2, ADI-R, and MIGDAS-2, conducted by registered psychologists with expertise in late-identified autism.

An adult autism diagnosis provides more than a label — it offers a framework for understanding yourself and access to practical supports including the Disability Tax Credit and workplace accommodations.

Adult ADHD Assessment

ADHD in adults often looks different from the hyperactive child stereotype — it shows up as chronic disorganisation, difficulty sustaining attention, impulsivity, emotional dysregulation, and a persistent sense of underperformance despite real effort and capability.

Our adult ADHD assessments use a comprehensive battery of tools to evaluate attention, executive function, and related concerns, producing a detailed report suitable for workplace accommodations, medication decisions, and accessing support.

Child Psychoeducational Assessment

A psychoeducational assessment helps identify the specific learning, attention, cognitive, or developmental factors affecting a child’s academic performance and daily functioning. It answers the question parents and teachers often ask: why is this child struggling when they’re clearly intelligent?

Our assessments evaluate reading, writing, math, attention, memory, processing speed, and executive function — producing a comprehensive report with specific recommendations for school supports, accommodations, and interventions.

Common reasons families seek a psychoeducational assessment include: learning disabilities (dyslexia, dyscalculia), ADHD, giftedness, school refusal, and preparation for post-secondary accommodations.

Child Autism Assessment

Early identification of autism in children allows families to access the right supports at the right time — including FSCD funding, school accommodations, and evidence-based interventions that make a meaningful difference to outcomes.

Our child autism assessments use the ADOS-2 and ADI-R, the gold standard tools for diagnosing autism across the lifespan. Sessions are conducted in a relaxed, child-friendly environment by psychologists experienced in working with young people.

What to Expect From a Solasta Assessment

All Solasta assessments follow a consistent, thorough process — from your first consultation through to your written report and feedback session. Here’s what to expect at each stage:

Free consultation – A no-obligation conversation to understand your situation, confirm the right assessment type, explain the process, and answer questions about cost and timeline.

Feedback session — we meet with you to walk through findings in plain language, explain what the results mean for you or your child specifically, and discuss next steps. You receive a comprehensive written report of 15 to 25 pages.

Assessment sessions — typically two to three appointments of approximately two to three hours each, conducted in our NW Calgary office. Sessions involve clinical interviews, standardised testing, and — for child assessments — parent interviews and behavioural observation.

Post-assessment support — your report includes specific recommendations and supports following an assessment.

Report writing and scoring — typically completed within two to four weeks of your final session.

Ongoing support — a diagnosis from Solasta doesn’t end the conversation. Our clinicians offer therapy specifically tailored to the needs identified in your assessment, and your report includes recommendations for external supports and community resources.

Assessment Fees

Psychological assessments represent a significant investment of clinical time — each assessment involves multiple sessions, several hours of scoring and interpretation, and a detailed written report. Fees reflect this.

For full pricing details, visit our fees page. The Disability Tax Credit is available for many diagnosed conditions and can significantly offset the cost of an assessment — we’re happy to explain this on your free consultation call.

Extended health benefits do not typically cover psychological assessments, but some employers offer coverage through workplace accommodation budgets. Contact your HR department or benefits provider to confirm.

FAQs

No. You can book directly without a referral from your doctor. A free consultation call is a good starting point — our team will help confirm which assessment is right for you and what to expect before you commit to anything.

Most assessments involve two to three sessions of approximately two to three hours each, spread over a couple of weeks. Report writing and scoring typically takes two to three weeks after your final session. From initial consultation to receiving your written report, most clients allow four to six weeks in total.

A Solasta assessment report is typically 15 to 25 pages and includes a summary of your background and history, results from all assessment tools used, interpretation of findings, a formal diagnosis where applicable, and a comprehensive recommendations section covering supports, accommodations, and next steps.

Solasta offers four assessment services: adult autism assessments, adult ADHD assessments, child autism assessments, and child psychoeducational assessments. All use gold-standard diagnostic tools and produce detailed written reports.

Assessment fees vary by type and reflect the clinical time involved — multiple sessions, several hours of scoring and interpretation, and a detailed written report. Visit our fees page for full pricing details, or ask on your free consultation call. The Disability Tax Credit can offset a significant portion of the cost for many clients.

Psychological assessments are not covered by Alberta Health Care, but most extended health benefit plans do cover assessments conducted by registered psychologists. Coverage varies by plan — check with your provider to confirm your specific benefits. The Disability Tax Credit is also available for many diagnosed conditions and can significantly offset the cost. We’re happy to discuss both options on your free consultation call.
