Solasta Counselling in the Calgary Community

Scott and Gillian moved back to Calgary after careers in public service in the United Kingdom. Calgary welcomed our family with opportunity, community, and the chance to build a life here.

We are deeply grateful for what this city has made possible for our family, our team, and Solasta Counselling. We believe that when a business is fortunate enough to grow in a community, it should find meaningful ways to give back.

That is why Solasta’s work extends beyond the therapy room: helping make counselling and psychological assessment more accessible, supporting women and girls in local sport, participating in Calgary’s autism community, investing in future clinicians, and showing up in the neighbourhood where we work.

Under the Same Sun: Solasta’s Giving Pledge

Access to counselling should not depend entirely on what someone can afford.

Under the Same Sun: Solasta’s Giving Pledge is our commitment to provide 2,030 hours of free counselling by 2030.

We chose the name because it reflects a simple belief: we share one community, and everyone deserves dignity, care, and the opportunity to move forward. The work of supporting community wellbeing cannot rest only with public systems, charities, or individuals. Local businesses can contribute too.

Solasta has already provided more than 1,000 hours of free counselling to people in our community. The Giving Pledge makes our commitment public, measurable, and ongoing.

Free Counselling Through Our Student Clinician Program

A significant part of this work happens through Solasta’s supervised student clinician program. Counselling students provide real sessions to people in the local community who may otherwise have struggled to access support.

Student clinicians work under the close supervision of experienced Solasta psychologists. This allows people to access counselling at no cost while giving emerging clinicians meaningful, carefully guided experience as they develop their skills.

To date, the program has provided more than 750 free counselling sessions and counting.

We are proud of this model because its impact runs in two directions: people can access support today, while Calgary gains better-prepared mental-health professionals for tomorrow.

In addition to the student clinician program, Solasta psychologists have contributed more than 320 hours of pro-bono psychological services, including psychological assessments provided at no cost when financial barriers would otherwise have prevented access.

A Public Commitment Through 2030

The Giving Pledge is not a one-time campaign. It is a long-term commitment to protect space within our practice for free counselling, so more people can access support when cost would otherwise stand in the way.

We will continue to track our progress and update this page as the pledge grows.

Supporting Women and Girls in Calgary Sport

Community wellbeing is supported in many places—not only in healthcare settings, but also wherever people have the opportunity to participate, build confidence, develop relationships, and feel that they belong.

Solasta is proud to support women’s and girls’ sport in Calgary. We believe sport can offer meaningful opportunities for connection, teamwork, mentorship, physical confidence, and community participation, particularly during adolescence and early adulthood.

Calgary Blizzard FC — Women’s Team

In 2025, Solasta became a shirt sponsor of Calgary Blizzard FC’s women’s team. That season, Blizzard won the League1 Alberta Women’s Championship—its second Alberta title in a row—and went on to represent Alberta at the League1 Canada Women’s Inter-Provincial Championship.

Women’s leagues continue to receive substantially less sponsorship and visibility than comparable men’s leagues. Supporting the Blizzard women’s team is one way we helped recognize and invest in the athletes, coaches, and community that make women’s sport possible.

Team Melville — Curling

In 2026, Solasta became a Silver sponsor of Team Melville, a competitive U18 women’s curling team based at NorthHill Curling Club in Calgary. The team also includes two U20 athletes who curl out of NorthHill.

Junior athletes work hard to compete, develop skills, manage pressure, and remain connected to their sport. Yet girls’ and women’s teams often receive far less attention and sponsorship than comparable boys’ and men’s programs. We are proud to support Team Melville and the opportunities that local sport can create for young athletes.

Supporting the Autism Community

YYC World Autism Awareness Day

Every April, Solasta supports YYC World Autism Awareness Day, hosted by the Autism Aspergers Friendship Society (AAFS). The event brings together autistic people, families, community organizations, and supporters for a free all-ages celebration that includes a resource fair, live performances by autistic artists, art activities, and the event’s signature bubble-blowing ceremony.

Our team participates with a booth at the event because it is important to us to be part of a community space focused on connection, visibility, and celebration. Solasta clinicians conduct autism assessments for children, adolescents, and adults throughout the year; YYC World Autism Awareness Day is an opportunity to meet the broader community outside the assessment process.

Training Calgary’s Future Clinicians

Every registered psychologist and therapist begins as a supervised trainee. We take that responsibility seriously.

Solasta’s student counselling internship program gives counselling students a structured opportunity to develop clinical skills under close supervision. The program has provided more than 750 free counselling sessions to community members, while Solasta’s senior clinicians have donated more than 200 hours of supervision and mentorship.

We also have a dedicated Early Career Development Lead, Marissa Whalley, who oversees how interns are supported and developed. The goal is not simply to help trainees complete a placement. It is to help them become thoughtful, ethical, capable clinicians who can continue contributing to Calgary’s mental-health community.

This work benefits current clients, student clinicians, and the wider community. Accessible counselling is available today, while future professionals develop the experience and support they need to provide quality care tomorrow.

Our Neighbourhood

Solasta’s office is at the southern edge of Capitol Hill, a Calgary community established in 1948 and located minutes from SAIT and the University of Calgary.

We are members of the Capitol Hill Community Association because we believe a counselling practice should belong to its neighbourhood—not simply occupy a building within it. We are proud to work in a community shaped by students, families, long-term residents, local businesses, and nearby post-secondary institutions.

CAP

All of our psychologists are registered with the College of Alberta Psychologists.

PAA

Many of our psychologists are members of the Psychologists’ Association of Alberta.

CCPA
