Why People Choose Online Therapy

Online counselling isn’t a compromise — for many people, it’s simply the better option. The research is clear: virtual therapy produces outcomes equivalent to in-person therapy across a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship difficulties, and more.

People choose online therapy at Solasta for many different reasons:

  • You live outside Calgary — access to registered psychologists in smaller Alberta communities is genuinely limited. Online therapy removes that barrier entirely.
  • Your schedule doesn’t allow for travel — commuting to an appointment mid-day, or across the city at 5pm, isn’t realistic for everyone. Online sessions eliminate that.
  • You have young children at home — attending from your own space during nap time or while a partner is home is far easier than organising childcare around an in-person appointment.
  • You’re managing a physical health condition or injury — getting to a clinic isn’t always possible. Online therapy brings support directly to you.
  • You find it easier to open up at home — many clients report that they feel more relaxed and are able to go deeper in sessions when they’re in a familiar, comfortable environment.
  • You’re going through a difficult period and just need to start — removing every logistical barrier makes it easier to take that first step when motivation is hardest to find.
  • You travel frequently for work — virtual sessions mean your therapy doesn’t stop when you’re away.
  • You’d prefer privacy — attending therapy from home means no waiting room, no running into anyone you know, no navigating a building.

Therapists Providing Online Counselling

What Online Therapy at Solasta Looks Like

Online sessions at Solasta are designed to feel as close to in-person as possible — secure, private, and unhurried. Here’s what you can expect.

The Platform

Sessions take place through a secure, encrypted video platform integrated with our Jane App booking system. You will receive a link before your session — there is nothing to download or install. It works on any device: laptop, tablet, or smartphone.

How It Feels

Most clients find that any initial self-consciousness about the format fades within the first few minutes of their first session. The conversation flows in the same way it would in person. Your therapist is fully present, attuned, and working with you in exactly the same way.

If a session is disrupted by a technical issue — which happens occasionally — your therapist will call you directly to continue or reschedule without charge.

What You’ll Need

A private space where you won’t be overheard or interrupted — even a parked car or a bedroom with the door closed works. A reliable internet connection. A device with a camera and microphone. That’s it.

Sessions, Fees, and Booking

Sessions are 50 minutes and priced at the same rate as in-person appointments. Online sessions are covered by most extended health benefit plans in the same way as in-person sessions — your coverage is based on the clinician’s credential, not the delivery format. We offer direct billing to over 30 insurance providers.

The Solasta Difference

17 Clinicians — Exceptional Choice

Most online therapy services in Alberta offer a small roster of therapists or a matching algorithm that assigns you to whoever is available. At Solasta, you choose from 17 registered clinicians across a wide range of specialisations, backgrounds, and therapeutic approaches. You can read every profile, watch or read how each person describes themselves, and make an informed decision about who feels like the right fit — before you book anything.

Free 15-Minute Consultation First

Before committing to sessions, you have the opportunity to speak briefly with the therapist you’re considering. This is a no-pressure conversation to help you assess the fit — and it’s free.

Same-Week Booking for Most Clinicians

We don’t have multi-month waitlists for most of our team. Most clients can book an initial consultation within days. For virtual clients especially, there are no geographic constraints limiting which therapist is available to you — you have access to our full team.

Registered Psychologists — Not Just Counsellors

All of Solasta’s clinicians are registered with their professional college — College of Alberta Psychologists, Alberta College of Social Workers, or CCPA. This matters for insurance coverage and for the standard of care you receive. Our team includes Registered Psychologists, Provisional Psychologists, and Registered Social Workers, as well as supervised student interns who offer free sessions.

Why Choose Solasta for Online Counselling?

At Solasta, we pride ourselves on providing high-quality, compassionate care. Here’s why our clients trust us:

Experienced Therapists

All of our therapists have extensive experience with online counselling.

Person-Focused Care

We prioritize your goals and preferences, creating a collaborative and empowering therapeutic relationship.

Flexible Options

With virtual counselling available, we make it easy to access support wherever you are in Alberta or beyond.

Online Therapy for Specific Groups

Busy Professionals and Parents

If your schedule is packed and the idea of adding a commute to a therapy appointment feels impossible, online sessions were made for you. Many of our clients attend sessions from their office, their car, or their home during a lunch break. Our clinicians offer evening and weekend availability.

Teens and Young Adults

Teenagers and young adults often engage more openly in online sessions than they do face to face with a new adult. The familiar screen-based format can actually facilitate connection and disclosure, particularly in the early stages of therapy. Our clinicians experienced in adolescent work are all available online.

Rural and Remote Albertans

If you live in a smaller community, you may have few or no local registered psychologists available to you. Wait times for mental health services in rural Alberta can be significant, and many people go without support simply because it is not accessible. Online counselling with Solasta removes that barrier. You receive the same quality of registered psychological care as someone who walks into our Calgary office — from wherever you are.

People Navigating Anxiety or Social Anxiety

Leaving the house, navigating unfamiliar spaces, and sitting in a waiting room can all be genuinely difficult for people experiencing anxiety. Online therapy removes those friction points entirely — which means the people who often need support most urgently can access it most easily.

People Who Have Never Tried Therapy Before

First-time therapy clients often find that starting online feels less intimidating than walking into a clinic. There’s less formality, less unfamiliarity, and often a lower psychological barrier to that first session. If you’ve been considering therapy for a while but haven’t quite taken the step, starting virtually can be a gentler entry point.

All Services Available Online

Every counselling and therapy service Solasta offers is available virtually. This includes:

All of our psychologists are registered with the College of Alberta Psychologist.

Many of our psychologists are members of the Psychology Association of Alberta.

CCPA

Many of our psychologists are members of the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association.

Our Calgary Office Space

Our thoughtfully designed counselling spaces are crafted to create a warm, welcoming environment where you can feel completely at ease.

FAQs

Online counselling takes place through a secure video platform, similar to Zoom, where you meet with your therapist at a scheduled time. Sessions are typically 50 minutes long and follow the same structure as in-person therapy. You can join from home, your office, or any private space where you feel comfortable.

Yes. Research shows that online counselling can be just as effective as in-person therapy for many concerns, including anxiety, depression, stress, and relationship challenges. In some cases, clients find it even more helpful because it’s easier to attend consistently and apply strategies in their everyday environment.

Online counselling is a good option for adults, teens, couples, and families who want flexible, accessible support. It can be especially helpful if you have a busy schedule, limited access to in-person services, or simply feel more comfortable speaking from your own space.

Online counselling can support a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, stress, burnout, relationship challenges, life transitions, and self-esteem. Your therapist will work with you to understand your goals and tailor sessions to your specific needs.

Getting started is simple. You can book a free consultation to discuss what you’re looking for and be matched with a therapist who fits your needs. From there, you’ll schedule your first session and begin working toward your goals at a pace that feels right for you.

Yes. Depending on your therapist’s credentials, online counselling may be available across multiple provinces and territories in Canada. This makes it possible to continue working with the same therapist even if you move or travel within Canada.
